How The Gaze works, feature by feature.

Getting started

Who can use The Gaze?
Anyone aged 18 or over — no exceptions. You confirm your date of birth when you sign up, and we remove any account we find belongs to someone younger.
Why do I have to confirm my email?
The Gaze stays locked until you open the link we email you. It proves the address is yours, and it's where password reset links are sent. Nothing arrived? Check your spam folder — the message comes from noreply@thegaze-dating.com.
Why can't anyone see my profile yet?
A profile only appears once it has all six: a few words about you, three things for a desert island (each with a reason), at least one interest, your date of birth, gender and orientation. Until then you can browse and send likes, but nobody can open your profile or like you back. The checklist at the top of Profile shows what's still missing — and remember to save.

Pass-by

How does pass-by work?
With location on, The Gaze notices when you and another member are within range of each other at about the same time. You both get the crossing: an alert, a place on the “Where you've crossed paths” map and a count on each other's profiles. People you cross more often appear higher up in Discover.
How far does it reach?
On the free plan, 500 m. With Premium, up to 5 km. Distance filters don't change this — they only decide who you see in Discover.
Can anyone see exactly where I am?
No. Before anything is compared or saved, your position is rounded to a shared grid of about 150 m, and your exact location is never stored or shown to anyone. Distances only ever appear as approximate bands, like “~400 m”. The map puts each crossing in the right distance band, but deliberately not in the real direction.
Why didn't I get an alert?
Check that notifications are on in Profile → “Notifications” and that The Gaze may use your location. The other person also needs location on at the same time. While “Background pass-by” is off, crossings are only noticed with The Gaze open. And after one alert about someone, the next one about the same person won't come straight away.
What is “Background pass-by”?
Switch it on in Profile → “Privacy” and the installed app keeps checking for crossings while it's closed. It only works in the app from the App Store or Google Play — a browser stops checking once the tab is in the background. On Android you'll see a small ongoing notification while it's on; that's what keeps the check running.

Likes and matches

How do likes and matches work?
Like a profile and, if they like you back, it's a match — the conversation appears in Matches. “Pass” removes someone from your deck, and nobody is told you passed. In Matches → “Likes” you see how many people liked you; Premium shows who.
How many likes do I get?
5 a day on the free plan, fresh each day. Premium has no limit.
Can I undo a pass?
With Premium, yes — up to 5 times in any 24 hours. Tap “Take back” in Discover and the person you just passed is back.
Who shows up in Discover?
Members with a finished profile who fit your filters — minus anyone you've already liked, passed or blocked. People you've crossed paths with more often come first. “Match filters” lets you set age, who you want to see, body type, height, weight, distance and shared hobbies.
Someone passed on me — is that final?
Not necessarily. Rewrite your words — your bio, interests or desert island answers — and people who passed on you at least 7 days ago will see your profile again. This happens at most once every 30 days, and never with anyone you've blocked or who has blocked you.

Conversations

How do I reply to one particular message?
Swipe the message sideways, then type — the original shows above your reply.
What do the ticks mean?
They show a message has been sent and delivered. Whether it has been read shows only when you both have “Read receipts” on — switch yours off in Profile → “Privacy” and you stop seeing theirs too.
How do I end a conversation?
There's no separate unmatch: a conversation ends when one of you blocks the other. The chat closes and is removed for both of you — see “Safety” below.

Photos

Where do photos appear?
Only inside a private conversation — never on a profile. Profiles on The Gaze have no photos at all.
What is “Reveal, together”?
In a chat, each of you can seal one photo. Neither of you sees anything until you both have — then both photos appear at the same moment. Until then you can withdraw yours; a photo that has already been delivered can't be taken back.
Which photos are allowed?
JPEG, PNG or WEBP, up to 5 MB — the app shrinks large photos for you. Location data hidden in the file is removed before it's stored. Every photo is checked automatically: nude and sexual images are refused and never reach the other person.
Why was my account suspended?
Refused photos are recorded on your account. After three, it's suspended — straight away if a photo shows sexual content involving someone who appears to be a minor. A person reviews every suspension: contact us, and we'll restore the account if the check got it wrong.

Question of the Month

How does the vote work?
Each month four questions are on the ballot in Vote. Premium members get one vote a month and can move it to another question until the month ends. Last month's winner is shown at the top.
Can I suggest a question?
Yes, with Premium: one question a month. A person reads every suggestion before it can appear anywhere, and approved questions join a future month's ballot. Links and addresses aren't allowed.

Premium & extras

Payments are switched off for the demo — every premium feature is already unlocked for everyone. Prices are shown for reference only.

What does Premium include?
Unlimited likes, pass-by alerts up to 5 km instead of 500 m, seeing who liked you, taking back up to 5 passes every 24 hours, voting for the Question of the Month and suggesting one question a month.
How much does it cost?
There are monthly and yearly plans, priced in your local currency. The exact price is always shown before you pay, and a plan renews automatically until you cancel it.
How do I cancel?
Subscribed in the App Store or Google Play? Cancel in your phone's subscription settings — Apple and Google handle that billing. Paid by card on the web? Manage it in Profile. Cancelling stops future renewals; the current period isn't refunded.

Safety

How do I block someone?
Open their profile — from Discover, the map, or by tapping their name at the top of a chat — and tap the shield icon. You disappear from each other everywhere, and your conversation and every record of where you crossed paths are deleted for both of you. It can't be undone.
How do I report someone?
Tap the shield icon on their profile, choose “Report this person” and pick what happened — harassment, messages or photos, following you, a fake profile, someone who seems under 18. Reporting blocks them at the same time, they aren't told who reported them, and we review every report: we can warn, suspend or remove an account. Already blocked them, or it's urgent? Contact us.
Meeting someone in person?
Meet somewhere public, tell a friend where you're going, and trust your instincts. If you're ever in danger, call 112. The Gaze doesn't verify identities or run background checks.

Account & privacy

Is my profile translated?
Yes. When you save, your bio and desert island answers are translated automatically, so people who use The Gaze in English, Polish, German or Czech can read you in their own language. Your original words are always kept. The translation is done by an AI service (Anthropic), as the privacy notice describes.
How do I change the language?
Profile → “Language”. Before you sign in, use the globe at the top of the screen.
What do notifications tell me?
For now, one thing: that you've just crossed paths with someone. Switch them on or off in Profile → “Notifications”.
Forgot your password?
Tap “Forgot your password?” on the sign-in screen. We'll email you a reset link that works for one hour.
How do I delete my account?
Profile → “Delete my account”. Enter your password and type DELETE to confirm. Your profile, conversations, matches and the whole record of your crossings are erased at once and can't be recovered. A subscription bought in the App Store or Google Play has to be cancelled there separately.
